As it tears into the southeast Caribbean islands, Hurricane Beryl intensifies to a Category 5 storm.

With destructive winds and storm surge driven by the Atlantic's record warmth, Hurricane Beryl tore doors, windows, and roofs off homes throughout the Southeast Caribbean late on Monday, strengthening to Category 5 status.

Beryl was the first Atlantic Category 4 storm to make landfall on the island of Carriacou in Grenada. Later that day, the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that Beryl's winds had strengthened to Category 5. The storm was expected to intensify and then weaken significantly as it moved farther into the Caribbean over the next few days.

The situation on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, where there were initial reports of significant damage but communications were mainly down, had not allowed authorities to assess the situation, according to Grenada's prime minister Dickon Mitchell, who stated that one person had died and that he could not yet say if there were other fatalities.

Shoes, trees, downed power lines, and other debris littered the streets from St. Lucia island south to Grenada. Half-baked banana trees and lifeless cows rested in verdant meadows, with tin and plywood dwellings tipped precariously close by.

By late Thursday, Beryl, still a Category 1 storm, was still sweeping the southeast Caribbean early Tuesday on a path that was taking it just south of Jamaica and near the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

It developed considerably early on Tuesday morning, reaching Category 5 status with gusts of 165 mph (270 kph). It peaked late on Monday.

Beryl was traveling west-northwest at 22 mph (35 kph) and was around 445 miles (715 kilometers) east-southeast of Isla Beata in the Dominican Republic. There was a tropical storm warning for the southern coast of Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and a hurricane alert for Jamaica.

The National Hurricane Center stated that although there was likely to be fluctuations, Beryl was predicted to maintain major hurricane intensity as it proceeded across the central Caribbean and came close to Jamaica on Wednesday. Substantial weakening was anticipated after that.
